Tele-Tuesday #8 – New to Summer 2011

Every summer, the major networks pick up at least one new show hoping to break it big with huge ratings success.  With June just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away, here are a few of the programs that might fit your television tastes.  Give ‘em a try!

ABC: The Hot ZoneThe new medical drama

The Hot Zone follows the medical staff, consisting of nurses and doctors from the allied nations (the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia), in Afghanistan as they treat the men and women fighting to protect their country’s freedom.  The show stars a few familiar faces: Elias Koteas (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Shutter Island), Michelle Borth (The Forgotten and Hawaii Five-0), and Luke Mably (The Gates).  Premiers Tuesday, June 21ST

NBC: Love BitesThe new romantic comedy

Love Bites follows a single girl (Becki Newton from Ugly Betty and Guiding Light) dating in New York City while searching for love, and a Venice Beach married couple (Constance Zimmer from Entourage and Boston Legal, and Greg Grunberg from Heroes and Alias). Love Bites plans to feature an array of guest stars including Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer), Lindsay Price (90210 and Eastwick), and Guillermo Diaz (Weeds and Half Baked) just to name a few. Premiers Thursday, June 2ND

USA: Necessary Roughness – The new sports series

Necessary Roughness follows a New York woman attempting to balance her family and her career following a recent divorce.  She accepts a position as a therapist for a professional football team, and is assigned to assist the team’s star receiver in actually catching the ball.  Callie Thorne (Rescue Me and Prison Break) stars as Dani Santino along with Scott Cohen (The Gilmore Girls and Law & Order: Trial by Jury), Mehcad Brooks (True Blood and Desperate Housewives), and Marc Blucas (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Knight and Day).  As an added bonus, the show is inspired by a true story.  Premiers Wednesday, June 29th

USA: Suits – The new legal series

Instructed by a partner to hire another brilliant Harvard Law graduate for his Manhattan law firm, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht from Whiteout and Love and Other Drugs) recruits a brilliant new associate, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams from Friday Night Lights and many other cameo appearances on popular television shows).  But, Mike has a huge secret – he never graduated college, yet alone law school.  The two unconventional minds work together balancing the law and lying to everyone – now that’s a dilemma, right?  Premiers Thursday, June 23rd

Unfortunately, many of the summer shows on the basic cable channels don’t fare well; however, there are a few that return this year including Rookie Blue (ABC) and Flashpoint (CBS).  The USA network, on the other hand, ROCKS the summer broadcasting, and I’m personally looking forward to their new shows this summer!

What shows are you looking forward to checking out this summer? Do you prefer sex, dating, and  marriage comedies, medical dramas, legal series, or sports-themed television?  I’d love to hear from you!

  1. Hi Tiffany. Thanks for the preview of the summer. Actually, I’m a Criminal Minds and Dexter fan. But only when they are done well. Thanks for your post. 🙂

  2. Of the ones you mentioned, Suits looks interesting to me. I tend to like law dramas, but I particularly like shows that can put some humor into the situation.

    We’ll see what happens!

    1. I Agree – Suits looks the best with Necessary Roughness trailing behind. As usual, USA looks to rule the summer! I saw a commercial last night for a new Lifetime show that starts June 12th that I need to check-out…The Protector….thanks for stopping by & leaving a comment!

  3. Honestly? I’m a little burned-out on new shows, and my DVR would go postal if I tried to add anything to its roster, LOL!

I’m so busy with Castle, NCIS, CSI, CSI:NY, The Talk, Late Night With Craig Ferguson, Ellen Degeneres, and America’s Best Dance Crew, to name a few, that I barely have time for any other shows.

The newest show I dig is Body of Proof with Jeri Ryan and Dana Delaney. I never would have even given it a chance, but two of my best friends are morticians, so watching a medical examiner drama is kinda fun.

    1. Gigi, I love Craig Ferguson! I would like to see him do standup. Body of Proof is good, did you check out Rizzoli & Isles on TNT? it returns this summer – I like it more tha BOP. Thanks for stopping by & leaving a comment! Here’s a toast to FANDOM!

  4. There’s a show starting pretty soon called The First 48: Missing Persons. It’ll be coming on A & E. My husband dislikes these shows, so I’ll be watching it alone, which means I might not watch it for long.

As usual, we’ll be watching True Blood and Hung on HBO when they start again. Weeds will be starting again in June on Showtime. I do hope this is the last season of that one, though. It has really gone downhill.

We watched The Big C last year, but, after they killed off Phyllis Somerville’s character in the next to last episode, we’re unsure we want to continue. She was the only interesting character on the whole show.

I can’t wait for Dexter to come back this fall. He’s our favorite.

    1. Hey, Catie! I watched a new show on Lifetime this week – Vanished with Beth Holloway. Yep, you guessed it! Natalee Holloway’s mom….it was actually good, I didn’t know the story. It airs Monday nights with an encore on Wednesdays, I believe…. Thanks for stopping by & leaving a comment!

  5. Love Bites looks interesting, and I enjoy USA Channel broadcasting overall. But it seems like the other shows are the typical – medical, law, and police drama. Perhaps they need to tap into our vast reservoir of fabulous ideas out here in the writing world. How about a zombie sitcom? A reality show about pharmaceutical salespeople (The Biggest Schmoozer)? A dramedy about the struggles and genius of unpublished authors?

  6. Well I’m still going through Vampire Diaries withdrawal but I heard Morgan Freeman’s Into the Wormhole is supposed to be back this summer. I’m still watching the Firefly reruns on the Science channel, too. It’s a real shame they cancelled this excellent series after only 14 shows. But then I’m a Joss Whedon fan and I like just about everything he does.

    1. Hey, Angela! I think we’re all a bit in mourning over the lack of new Vampire Diaries episodes….I know I am! I still miss Buffy…did you watch Dollhouse? Thanks for stopping by!

  7. You know me, I read YOUR BLOG to sub for the actual TV. 🙂

The line-up looks fun, though I won’t be watching a lick of it (sticking my the no TV/only writing vow). I will however, stay tuned in to you for constant entertainment. Thanks for the post!

    1. Jen! I feel like we haven’t talked in forever…..I still don’t know how you can give TV up, but I’m so glad my blog keeps you going! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  8. I love these previews, Tiffany! So helpful and interesting. “Necessary Roughness” looks pretty cool. I’d like to see more clever sitcoms on tv.

    1. Hey, Kathy! I would love to see more clever sitcoms on TV too, but for some reason the networks just don’t shop many. @Julie_Glover suggested a zombie sitcom…my guy would love that! Here’s to hoping some things change…thanks for stopping by!

  9. Not sure I’ll try any of those new ones. I’ve got my loyalties already established: The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles, In Plain Sight, Flashpoint, and Eureka. Might try ABC’s Nine Lives of Chloe King, but hey, it’s based on a young adult book series, so of course I have to see what they make of it. 😉

  10. Ooh. None of those grab me. I’d watch Rookie Blue for the exquisite Missy Peregrym, but the others….? Meh. Give me Science Fiction or Fantasy, I guess. And more time to watch TV!

  11. USA is my home for Summer TV, so I’ll be checking out those Suits and Necessary Roughness. I do hope we get some more Callie Thorne on Burn Notice. She was like a hyper evil Shelia.

  12. I watched two seconds of Love Bites and had to turn it off. I really want to check out Suits! I haven’t heard anything about it yet

    1. The pilot of Love Bites has been the best episode to date. If there was enough else on TV to keep me buys this summer, I’d stop watching. I’m a glutton for punishment.

Now, the USA shows are good – bot Suits and Necessary Roughness. We’ve only had 2 episodes of Suits and one of Necessary Roughness thus far but I’ll definitely be tuning in for more.

      Thanks for coming by, Sara!

  13. I just watched the pilot of Necessary Roughness. I really enjoyed it! Despite the fact that I am not a football fan (yes, I’m a Texan nonetheless), I think the series has real promise. The lead actress was excellent. Thanks for the heads-up, Tiffany!

    1. Hey, Julie! I enjoyed the pilot too and I’m looking forward to this week’s episode. I usually love the USA shows, so I’m not surprised by Necessary Roughness. Happy 4th and thanks for commenting!
